The Burgundy Edit – October 2024

The leaves have started to change colour and grace our terrace floor. As the fashion industry has runaway with the burgundy trend this autumn, we thought we’d bring you our very own Edit.

The Burgundy Edit: Bar Edition

From our main Wine List you will find our core collection of Burgundies, a fantastic selection of both reds and whites.

Our classic Beaujolais Village, light and fresh with notes of red cherries, cranberries and rose petals, it pairs perfectly with the nutty Woodside Red cheese from Sussex. This is followed by a complex and sophisticated Pinot Noir, Vallet Frères Gevrey-Chambertin. With hints of dried cherries then morello cherry, forest floor, violet, and a long finish it is a more structured, elegant experience.

Our white Burgundies disrupt the colour palette and make the Edit all the more enticing! Mâcon and Chablis lead the way. The wonderful Macôn-Chaintré, Domaine Abélanet- Laneyrie, with notes of lemon, peach, and butter cream it will delight the palate especially when accessorised with a slice of Schlossberger. Chablis Agnès Gleizes, Gautheron, with notes of preserved lemon, apricot, sea air, it stands out from the crowd.

The Burgundy Edit: Fine Wines Edition

From our Specials and Fine Wines list we offer a truly grand selection of Burgundy wines.

Nico, our bar manager, has highlighted our Arnoux Lachaux, Pinot Fin. The OG of Pinot Noir, it is a very rare, exclusive grape. Now seldom grown, Pinot Fin brings aromas of red and black fruits and hints of wood. It is robust yet silky with tannins. The Haute Couture of wine!

The Burgundy Edit is enriched by our Sylvain Debord collection.
Volnay 2022, a silky old-vine classic red with raspberry and violet notes, refined tannins and a long, elegant finish.
Corton Grand Cru, Le Rognet 2022, opulent and luxurious with aromas of ripe cherry, raspberry and hints of spice. The palate is framed by a plush tannin structure through to a long resonant finish.
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2021, with expressive aromas of red cherry, plum and violet lead to beautifully balanced palate with plush, well-integrated tannins through to a long, exquisite finish.

Next on our Burgundy runway we have the 2020 BiNaume, Le Gamay de L’Allie, the result of a labour of love of husband and wife duo. Produced in a very natural way it offers intense notes of red fruits and candied pepper, a fresh wine yet supple in body and co-ordinates perfectly with St Nectaire.

The icon of our Edit must be the Y. Clerget, Volnay 1er Cru Clos de Verseuil Monopole 1986. The oldest wine our list is an exceptional vintage. Since the 13th century the Clerget family has produced Burgundy wines, now in their 28th generation of wine making they present an exclusive wine which promises notes of black fruits, ripe cherry and fragrant spice. Lightly oaked with tertiary notes of truffle due to the bottle long ageing. A one of a kind find, right here at Gordon’s!

The Burgundy Edit: Deli Edition

Our much anticipated Deli has finally opened and while our coffee, filled baguettes and salads are flying off the shelves we wanted to highlight all the wonderful treasures you can find in the shop.

For this Burgundy Edit we thought we would introduce our Ribblesdale goat cheese. With honey and covered in edible flowers, it is a delicious gem perfect to surprise a cheese lover or to add to your cheese platter at home to impress your guests.

Just arrived in the Deli, is our range of chocolates: premium and beautifully packaged. I Peccatucci di Mamma Andrea, Sicilian confectioners, go by the Italian saying: “mangiare con gli occhi”, literally “to eat with your eyes”. Everything is a little work of art, both for the eyes and the tastebuds. A stylish midweek pick-me-up maybe, or a stocking filler perhaps?

Next amount our treats is the Poilâne biscuit spoon. One of our very first finds in our search of outstanding products, it makes for the perfect pocket-sized treat on the go. Stir it in one of our excellent coffees or enjoy it after your favourite sandwich – it’s sure to bring just the right amount of sweetness when needed.

And of course, we couldn’t forget about accessorising! While our tote bags are slowly but surely making their stamp on the London streets (and beyond) we now offer a Gordon’s Deli sustainable, stainless steel water bottle. The height of fashion and eco friendliness, they can be used in the Deli to fill up from our on tap fresh still and sparkling water, free of charge, and why not to keep your wine chilled for on the go picnics*?

The Burgundy Edit: Home Edition

Why stop your Gordon’s experience on Villiers Street? Take it home too! Our online shop is full of wonderful wines for any occasion – gifting, hosting, everyday table wine – and the list is growing. Soon to be added is our Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Cuvée Margot, Olivier Boussard. A family vineyard, now run by Margot Boussard, whose father’s first Pinot Noir harvest was the year she was born, 2001. And being the first little girl in the Boussard family, her name was used on the label. And today she is happy to have her name on the bottle! A wine with a lovely story and a great taste with its notes of fresh red fruits, blackberry and cassis. A great talking point for any dinner party, and a wine which pairs beautifully with cheese.

Cuvée Margot is perfect to pair with our deli range of Murgella cheeses. Our trio of Stracciatella, Burrata and Smoked Burrata are made in Puglia, by the Palazzo family, third generation cheese makers who focus on quality and tradition. They are wonderful on their own or as part of a recipe and are sure to impress!

Why not take home your favourite crunchy baguette or houmous from Gordon’s? Or our Giusti red or black label aged balsamic vinegar of Modena? Exceptional in quality and taste. And have you tried our balsamic vinegar onions**? Produced in very small batches in Rome; they are an experience of their own and a quirky addition to your table spread alongside our taralli, a fun twist on the cheese cracker. All perfect for that must autumnal burgundy tablescaping!

No matter the occasion, both our online shop and Deli, offer great options that need to be explored.

* Don’t forget our lovely ready to go picnics!
** Proceed with caution, they are highly addictive
